Hello 8dio! I’ve got a question about the contest conditions. If, for example, I use a sustain patch of an instrument I could write an arrangement with divisi and therefore “more” instruments? Or maybe that doesn’t matter as long as I respect the three track condition?
    Thanks in advance!

    • Tyler Gillis

Hello Thiago, As long as the final product ends with 3 tracks total you are good 🙂

      Flex the creativity!

    • Jami Katajisto

Thiago, because you are still using one library/patch for that one track trough, so it´s okay. But just remember to add what you are using in the description of the video, before uploading, so 8Dio Team will know.

  • Nicault Stephane

Hello 8DIO, when you say “instrument” it’s a Kontakt instrument or one instrument as a violin ? For exemple, New Rythmic Aura is an instrument for you or not ?
    Thank you for you answer.

    • Tyler Gillis

Hello Nicault, You can have 3 tracks total, for example you can use Anthology, Symphonic Shadows, and Silka. You can layer as many of these instances within 1 midi track as you would like but the end result should only use 3 Tracks total.

Not allowed, using 10 tracks for anthology basses, cellos, violas, violins 1, violins 2 Silka Sopranos, Altos, Tenor, Bass and an Instance of symphonic shadows.

      Happy Composing!!!

    • David Suarez

Rythmic Aura’s entire patch is considered 1 instrument in this contest. You can utilize any combination of it’s features, but only limited to 3 tracks.

      • samaranth

What means 3 tracks then in this context? As I’m not familiar with Ryhtmic Aura I’d like to use Majestica as an example.

Let’s say I use Majestica: if I then used Strings, Brass AND Woodwinds alltogether would that be considered as 3 tracks? Or would 3 tracks be: I have one instance of Kontakt running Strings, Brass and Woodwind patches from Majestica (1st track) then a different instance of Kontakt which hosts the 1928 Steinway (2nd track) and then in a 3rd instance of Kontakt I have a different library which would then be considered as the third track?

Unfortunately the description of this contest’s conditions is not very precise as there are several ways of interpreting it.

        • Jami Katajisto

Samaranth, I hope you have noticed my reply (above) considering also your question using Majestica 🙂

Greetings to all! Wonderful to see that there is already a lot of interest to this Scoring Contest! But it feels that briefing has caused a bit of confusion. Here´s how I understand it. – Above the video, it says “Your score must only contain a maximum of 3 Instruments” and below that video “Compose your track using any 3 instruments or less from the 8Dio catalogue. (Final track must be 3 Tracks Total or less)” I believe they are looking for something creative with the limitation, which basically means that they are not looking for how far people can bend the rules to fit a symphony orchestra into 3 tracks/instruments.

Because there´s Majestica mentioned, let´s take that for an example. If you are going to use it, you have to remember that it´s a sample library, which contains 4 different ensembles: Strings, Brass, Woodwinds and Percussion. Each ensemble, what you will use to it´s own track. If you are going use one instance of Kontakt running Strings, Brass and Woodwinds at the same time in one track, then you have already reached this maximum of 3 instruments. Hope this makes sense. And because the final track must be 3 Tracks Total OR Less, at least for me it kind of says: Less is more! Basically you can think of it that 3 instruments – one instrument (like for example violin) per track.

As I already mentioned at the beginning, I believe 8Dio is looking for something creative with the limitation. At least that is how I undertand this. I hope this will help you and made this a bit clearer. Wishing you all happy and creative composing!

Just in case you don´t know – If you guys have any questions and at that point you can´t reach anyone here, who would be able to help you, give you clear answer, you can always ask via 8Dio Support chat from George or Tyler and/or write an email to: support@8dio.com. Both are the most secure ways to get the answer that don´t leave you hanging with uncertainty! – Jami

Are we allowed to use different MIDI channels on each track? If so, then we could use up to 48 instruments. =p

I guess we can only use three individual patches, or?

    • I’m going to assume the limit is three instruments/MIDI channels/tracks/whatever. Anything else is just a cumbersome way of using up to 48 instruments, which isn’t really a limitation, unless we’re talking full scale virtual orchestration. 🙂

  • Josh

I’m failing to understand how anyone could possibly be confused by this. 3 tracks means 3 tracks. Period. Not 3 instances of Kontakt running separately with X# of tracks per instance.

I honestly thought of people being smarter than this.

You know what, go ahead and submit your songs using 64 tracks and get disqualified.
