Custom Instrument Series: Circle Strings overview

We did it again! We partnered with our master luthier and designed an instrument from scratch looking for new sounds, new timbres, new possibilities of sonic fulfilment, and we created Circle Strings.

Circle Strings is a peculiar instrument that can produce sound in any possible way – bowing the strings, plucking the strings, hitting the instrument,

anything is possible, the secret is in the resonance of its sympathetic box.

Everything started a year prior when we decided that looking for new sounds was the way to go. We called our master luthier and designed an instrument with experimentation in mind – it wouldn’t matter what it was, what mattered was to pull sound from new sources, new ways.

After months of tryouts, it was ready – and, since it had never been done before, we decided to capture its sounds from any possible angle and microphone in mind. Contact mics, overheads, close mics, but also shotguns, dynamics, below mics and even inside mics.

After sampling and editing and after having discarded whatever didn’t sound good enough, we created this beautiful library, designed to enrich your compositions with new sonic colors and resonance adventures!

To increase the possibilities, we also recorded dozens of Sound Effects, packed the library with an interface full of possibilities with our FX Pads and our latest CHAOS FX and created presets to offer you examples of what can be achieved!

Finally, we used our superstring technique to create long tails that can be used to enrich the sound in an organic way!

Bowed Sustains

Circle Strings was recorded in all possible ways. A bow was used to record not only sustains, but also more experimental ways of sustains like tremolo and bowing upwards to create a slightly different style. Bowed sustains work perfectly for creating long sustained pads for background in compositions, enriching the harmony and the resonance of an ordinary sustain. Additionally, applying the superstring tail helps tremendously to enrich further the sonic experience.

Tremolos also help creating a rougher approach as, while also being a long sustain, the noise of the bow attacking the strings constantly created a more eerie experience. Combine more sustains together and find the sound that you need!

Short Sustains

To complement our bowed adventures, we also recorded shorter sustains by plucking the strings with a pick or with the fingers. Additionally, we also used the bow to do spiccatos and col-legno hits, which work wonderfully for more aggressive kind of attacks.

Spiccatos are super tight and responsive and work great for doing fast ostinato rhythms. Additionally, because the short sustains are so immediate in comparison to the bowed sustains, the superstring tail contains a natural delay that complements the sound in a peculiar way. Shorts can also be combined with the bowed sustains in order to increase the attack impact, they work perfectly in combination. A unique sonic experience for all your needs!

Percussive Tonal Hits and Unique Sound Effects!

To take possibilities one step further, we also recorded percussive hits on Circle String. We hit the instrument and recorded the resonance of its inside. Hard hits with a rubber piece create a unique “boing” sound, always tonal. Softer hits with the fingers create a less resonant sound but also interesting, finally, the superstring tail in the percussive hits has an ever more defined attack with a natural delay and organic reverberation. Everything sounds unique about this!

To finish up, we destroyed our bow and used whatever we had available to create close to one hundred hunique sound effects, we just went all-in with String Circles until there was nothing else to sample!

Intuitive UI and CHAOS effects!

Our intuitive and well-known Legion GUI was used to assemble this library – with its quadruple engine of XY-Pad effects, anything can be done and assigned to anything! Additionally, our latest CHAOS provides even further customization of the sound. Anything is possible with Circle Strings, there are infinite combinations and flexibility to achieve new sonic limits!

As an example, we curated 10 presets using all the tools provided in the box. Each of the presets is uniquely done for different purposes, some of them have even further possibilities with the help of the Modulation Wheel. With all that offered, let’s see what you can come up with!
