Sequential Prophet XL Analog Hardware Synth overview

The Prophet XL is a potent fusion of samples-plus-synthesis and is Dave Smith’s most ground-breaking evolution of the Prophet yet. At its heart, it’s a bi-timbral, 8-voice-stereo (32-voice paraphonic synth) synth with a newly developed sound engine that powers two simultaneous 16-bit, 48kHz sample-based instruments plus two high-resolution digital oscillators — all processed through true stereo analog filters. The Prophet XL contains over 150 GB of internal samples from Academy Award winning sample developers 8Dio and thousands of deep-sampled instruments – and all of the powerful synthesis tools you’ve come to expect from Dave, the Prophet XL has a musical voice uniquely its own.

On the sample side of things, the Prophet XL provides two independent, stereo, digitally sampled instruments per voice (4 in Stack or Split mode). The 150 GB of internal sample content was created by 8Dio, known for pioneering “deep sampling.” You’ll find a diverse collection of acoustic and electronic instruments as well as plenty of edgy ambient and cinematic effects. You can shape the samples through loop manipulation, sample stretching, and the Prophet XL’s sound-sculpting modulation functions. Each sample instrument has its own Tone control for high-pass or low-pass filtering. Fifty gigabytes of additional internal storage is dedicated to importing external sample libraries. Support for user-created samples is now available. Add-on sample packs are available from 8Dio.

On the synth side, the Prophet XL gives you the power of a classic Prophet, with two high-resolution digital oscillators that feature both classic waveshapes and a supersaw for more timbral possibilities. Using the Shape Mod control, you can manually dial in a desired waveshape width for any of the classic sine, sawtooth, or pulse waves, or use an LFO or other mod source for continuously shifting timbre. You can shape the raw sounds with all of the classic synthesis functions you’d expect, including 4 syncable LFOs with slew and phase offset, 4 loopable five-stage envelope generators, and a 16-slot mod matrix with dozens of modulation sources and destinations.

At the heart of the Prophet XL’s powerful sound are its new, 24 dB-per-octave resonant low-pass filters, which are based on a vintage design. There are separate filters in the left and right channels for a true stereo signal path. These add exceptional presence and fullness to both the samples and the oscillators. For additional polyphony, you can switch the Prophet XL from 8-voice stereo mode to 16-voice mono mode to 32-voice paraphonic mode, which is useful for stacks and splits.

The polyphonic step sequencer provides up to 64 steps and up to 6 notes per step. You can create a different sequence for each layer if working in stacked or split voice mode, making it a powerful tool for composition or performance. Sequences can have ties and rests, and can sync to an external MIDI clock. The arpeggiator features note repeats, re-latching, and can be synced to external MIDI clock, as well.

A dual effects engine provides multiple reverbs, 2 delays (standard and BBD), chorus, phase shifter, flanger, vintage rotating speaker, high-pass filter, and distortion. In stacked or split voice mode, you can apply two different effects to each layer. Effects parameters can be modulated through the mod matrix.

With loads of sonic firepower and personality, a five-octave, premium-quality, semi-weighted keyboard with velocity and channel aftertouch, an integrated power supply, MIDI USB support, and three crisp OLED displays, the Prophet XL fits into any music rig or gig — in the studio or on the road.

The Sequential Prophet XL contains over 150GB of deep-sampled instruments – derived from a wide assortment of custom libraries (specifically designed for the Prophet X and XL) and from the 8Dio and private V8P collections. Thousands of deep-sampled instruments and far too many to list. Ambiences, Upright and Electric Basses, Studio Brass Ensemble and Studio Brass Solo Instruments (ex. Trombone, Trumpet, Saxophone etc), Large-Scale Symphonic Choirs, Childrens Choir, Experimental Basses and a large section of custom instruments.

Several deep-sampled drum kits and +50 different electronic kits, Massive Ensemble Percussion Sets, Taiko Drums, Guitars (ex. Acoustic, 12-String, Dobro, Electric, Mandolin etc), Thousands of Cinematic Sound Design Tools, Vintage Keyboards (ex. Suitcase, Hammond, Wurlitzer, Clavinet etc), Orchestral Effects. Deep Assortment of both Tonal and Non-Tonal Percussion, Grand Pianos, Upright Pianos, Prepared Pianos. Solo Voices. Studio String and Woodwind Ensembles. Custom Wavetables. Synth Ensembles and thousands of other instruments.

The Last Prophet 5 is our first official add-on for the Sequential Prophet X and XL analog hardware synthesizers – featuring the Prophet 5.

We had the pleasure of deep-sampling the last Prophet 5 ever made, which is also Dave Smiths personal unit (unit number 6427 / rev 1.3). We sampled every single program and some extras in the greatest fidelity possible – using an advanced signal chain of Jensen and Cinematic transformer pre-amps.

The end result is over 135 different instruments and a total of over 3.850 Prophet 5 vintage samples. The samples not only cover all the original patches, but also raw state oscillators in different states (ex.Pulse 1-3, Saw, Sawtooth, Saw 5ths, Square, Sync 1-2, Triangle, Triangle Dirty, Noise 1-2, Noise Circuit, Noise HPF etc” etc).

We recorded and processed the CP-70 at 24-Bit / 96Khz at our famous British Studio through a large custom NEVE desk. The Vintage CP-70 contains both standard (Sustains, Staccato, Staccatissimo w/ RR) and a large assortment of prepared articulations (Ex. Plucked Strings, Picked Strings,  Muted Strings, Harmonics etc.). All standard sustain samples were recorded with both pedal up and pedal down positions. In addition we also two types of staccatissimo (w/ round robin) for faster, percussive playing styles.

We will also be releasing a Super Grand, which is an exquisitely deep-sampled Grand Piano. We recorded it in multiple microphone perspectives and up to 10-velocity layers, including Sustains, Una Corda and both Staccatissimo and Staccato short notes with 5 x repetition notes. The shorter articulations offer the ability to play faster licks on the piano, but retaining the realism and ring-out of shorter notes.

The 2600 is without a doubt one of the most iconic analog synthesizers ever produced. For decades it fascinated the music world, and for over 45 years only a few synthesizers ever exuded this level of charm and appeal. The 2600 has been featured in all forms of music and media, from smooth synth lines to the creation of iconic sound design. In the hands of many famous musicians and master sound designers, the 2600 has found itself as a must-have synth in all areas of production; From Ben Burtt’s voicing of R2-D2 to the Doctor Who Theme, Elton John’s “Rocket Man” to users such as Herbie Hancock and Nine Inch Nails to only name a few. The 2600 competed against top synthesizers throughout the 1970s, earning its place as one of the most distinctive and sought after synthesizers of all time.

The 2600 is an analog beast, capable of producing a fantastic array of sounds. We created an extensive collection of 22 highly playable instruments and 32 individual presets that you can stack, combine and alter to your heart’s content. We have also included individual oscillators (Pulse, Saw, Sine, Square, Triangle & White Noise) so you can process, mangle and create your own presets using the iconic sound of the 2600.

The first of the OB series debuted in 1979, quickly becoming known for its vast and gritty analog sound. The OB-X continued to dominate the charts throughout the 1980s and to this day is still one of the world’s most sought-after synthesizers with only around 800 units in existence.

To truly capture the raw essence of the OB-X, we sampled over 40 patches, and custom designed 32 preset programs modeled after the synth’s most iconic sounds, such as “Sawyer’s Bass.”

There is something quite special about synths made in the 70s compared to those of any other era. Like fine wine they only get better with age, and this is undoubtedly true for the OB-X. Whether it is the high-end components or the slightly unsteady VCOs creating its rich, massive sound, the OB-X is just a beautiful instrument to play.

The instrument translates exceptionally well to the Prophet X/XL, with each sample in the Official Add-On being genuinely inspiring to play with, making it easy to get lost for hours playing through every program. You can now get the authentic sound of the OB-X, with all the convenience and advanced capabilities of the Prophet X series.

The OBX Add-On is sampled to give you everything you need right at your fingertips. Create entirely new dynamic instruments by combining sounds from other Prophet X patches, or use the raw samples captured from the OB-X to recreate the iconic sound of the 1980s.

We are incredibly excited to announce the T8 Add-On pack, our fifth official Add-On pack for Sequential Prophet X & XL Hardware Synthesizers.

The Prophet T8 was one of Sequential’s flagship instruments created in the early 80s featuring a pure analog architecture. Its substantial full size weighted keyboard combined with its range of features, from MIDI integration, velocity, aftertouch, sequencer, and a variety of keyboard modes (Single/Split/Double/Unison) made it a milestone in technology and instrument innovation alike.

One of its main selling points, other than its unique and powerful sound capabilities, was its high-quality velocity sensitive keys featuring polyphonic aftertouch (pressure activated modulation after a key is struck). These features separated it from other synths at the time and made it an extraordinarily nuanced and expressive instrument. Almost 35 years later these features coupled with weighted keys can be experienced once again with the Prophet XL.

The T8’s top of the line analog sound goes without saying as being a vital feature of the instrument, its diverse range and character have stood the test of time, making the instrument almost as iconic as its predecessor, the Prophet 5.

The Prophet T8 is considered one of the finest polyphonic analog synthesizers ever made, and with only 800 units produced the T8 has become a highly sought after luxury synthesizer by many synth enthusiasts and pro musicians.

The T8 Add-On is sampled with astonishing detail and laid out in the same intuitive format as our other Add-On packs, allowing you to access the full range of sounds easily, create entirely new instruments and presets or combine with existing sounds for unlimited variety.

We didn’t just sample any Prophet T8; we sampled Dave Smiths very own hardware unit. Being one of the best maintained T8’s in existence we were able to capture its iconic Prophet tone and the full range of every single original factory preset.

You can now combine the iconic sounds of this synthesizer with the latest features of your Prophet X or XL.

The Jupiter add-on is our latest Official Add-On pack for the Prophet X & XL featuring the classic sound of the Jupiter-4 (JP-4).

Making its debut in the late 70’s, the Jupiter 4 was the first true polyphonic synth produced by Roland®. Despite its smaller form, single oscillator per voice, and its maximum of four voice polyphony, the JP-4 still found success in a time when competition between synth developers was at its fiercest becoming a true icon in its own right. The synth was quickly adopted by electro-pop artists and in time by a range of other genres with a success that ultimately made its rich low-end analog sound synonymous with the era.

The distinct character and true essence of the JP-4 has been captured beautifully in the 25 instruments, and 16 custom designed preset programs (each with A/B Layers) for you to enjoy with all the advanced capabilities of the Prophet X & XL.

The JP-4 Add-On is extensively sampled with the different sounds and processes of the Jupiter-4, choose from a range of instruments from Pulse, Saw, Square, String and more, each with a variety of additional options. The Prophet X/XL gives you easy and immediate access to instruments and program presets so you can freely combine, stack, and manipulate any of the included sounds with the factory content of the Prophet to truly make them your own.
