The New Bazantar 39-string Acoustic Bass overview

Welcome to the New Bazantar by Mark Deutsch.

The Bazantar custom five-string acoustic bass, fitted with an additional twenty-nine sympathetic strings and four drone strings. The instrument possesses a melodic range of over five octaves, while its sympathetic range spans four octaves. This results in an interplay between melodic, sympathetic, and drone strings which weaves an unexpected landscape of resonance that is remarkably rich in texture.

The New Bazantar is a reimagination of the original instrument. We rebuilt the entire library from ground up and added a wealth of new features, including instant articulation browser, advanced front-face FX, ability to stack and pulse between different patches with one click, textural convolution delay, bow-stroke emulation, new presets and many other features.

The New Bazantar is a deep-sampled virtual instrument containing over 2,700 samples divided into two main categories: Multi-samples and phrase-samples. The multi-samples consists of both plucked and bowed representations of the instrument. We recorded traditional plucked bass with 8 round robins pr. note, a highly versatile amount of tapped samples at 10 round robins, regular sustains with and without vibrato, several dynamic sustains/swells. In addition we phrase-sampled Mark Deutsch playing the bass in a variety of ways from traditional plucked and bowed bass – to solo’s played with backside of the bow (Col Legno). We also did deep-sampling of the drone strings, so you have a highly versatile instrument.

In addition the instrument was recorded in a rich church environment with two sets of microphones (close/internal) and (ambient/player), so users can adjust the sound to their liking ranging from recordings from player perspective to more far, hall based microphones.. We also added a variety of controls (ex. pedal volume, release volume, noise reduction, EQ etc) and a visual velocity editor, so you can fully sculpt the piano to your liking. The Bazantar also includes a great selection of convolution reverbs and convolution effects.

Microphone and options

The Bazantar was recorded in a lush church environment with multiple microphone positions. We combined dozens of different microphones into two main mic stems. The first one being our Close stem, which is a near dry representation of the Bazantar. All aspects of the instruments are clear and all the beautiful resonators come to life. The other being the Far stem, which gives you a more ambient and traditional orchestral perspective. You can either use them individually or dial them together. You also have full live control over multiple advanced FX.

Advanced Articulations

The Bazanatar also features a wealth of advanced articulations. Including four types of expressive arcs, plucked (jazz inspired) pizzicato, multi-sampled taps, sustains with both vibrato and non-vibrato and massive collection of additional phrase material. So you have the best of both worlds in regards to deep-sampled multi-samples and a wide assortment of phrase material that inspires.

Front-Faced FX and Chaos FX

The Bazantar contains two parallel FX systems. The first one is our new Front-Faced FX, which allows you to control the most fundamental effects from the front panel (ex. Step Based Filtering, Pitch, Delay, and our new Textural Delay). You can also go deeper with our Chaos FX system, which includes, Phase Modulation, EQ, Bit-Crusher, Distortion, Dual Delays and an additional hall based convolution system on top of our custom Textural Convolution Delays.

Convolution That Sync's

Textural Convolution Delay is a new way of using convolution to create textural delays. The idea is to use non-conventional convolution impulses to augment the existing sound. So when the instrument delays – you will not just get a normal delay of the instrument, but also get the delay and texture of the convolution. This concept is called Textural Convolutions, and with dozens of hand-crafted impulses included and ready, this technique is a sure fire way to add depth and movement to a sound. As with many of our inbuilt effects, these can also be randomized.
