Music Box

The Music Box is a 19th century automatic musical instrument that produces sounds using a set of pins placed on a revolving cylinder or disc, which pluck the tuned teeth of a steel comb. They were developed from musical snuff boxes of the 18th century and called carillons à musique. Some of the more complex boxes also have a tiny drum and small bells in addition to the metal comb. The tone of a musical box is unlike that of any other musical instrument, although it is best described as somewhere between the timbres of a mbira.

The Microhammer Music Boxes have been sampled extensively in dry, room/studio, and hall locations for maximum user flexibility. In addition, we have made abstract versions of the patches to get even more content out of these wonderful, childish, and haunting devices.
